Pieces of the Same Quilt

Our lives…

Tiny patches of squares or triangles

Of a hand sewn quilt that sometimes fit or not…

Pieces discovered, overlapped, tucked in

held together tightly

with bits of colored thread.

Do you remember

The sound that lightning makes

in the Arizona desert at twilight

before all the stars appear?

Feelings sung aloud as music

Deserted windows

Empty now

         no one looking out.

No sounds of children playing.

No birds resting

          waiting for a crumb of bread.

No poets

          sitting on your ledge,

          watching goings on

          on streets below.

Reporting to the world beyond

          passionate fantasies.

Dreams…

          as yet untold.

Why do [...]

The Children Wept

Because they saw a sky of Wedgwood blue

Grass burned brown,

Flowers flat upon the ground

With tread marks left by tanks, and soldiers’ trucks…

                                               

Rainbows covering a molten sky

With colors never seen before that [...]
