I Saw an Eagle Fly

She feeds them trout caught by her mate

Placed ninety feet high in the nest

When the sun rises

She stays, watching, caring

Preparing, accomplishing her tasks

Her instincts focused

With no complaints, no task too great

When essential…

She sleeps tentatively, covered in snow

Like an icy blanket protecting her

And the three gray fur balls underneath her chest

With only feathers for warmth and heat

During the freezing night

Ready in seconds to protect

Against the predators above

The wind, the freezing rain, the night owls

Waiting to carry away the gray bundles

In a heartbeat to certain death…

I have known humans who cared

Those who loved, who protected

Their young

I have seen parents who did not

Who left their children with scars

That never healed…

I used to believe in miracles

Because I believed in God

Today I believe in miracles

Today I saw an eagle fly…

*The Raptor Resource Project is amazing!  See their 24/7 Eagle Cam by clicking on this link:  http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles

I wrote this poem last year after the baby eaglets survived the snowstorm.  This past Sunday D12 the eaglet born in early May 2012 who had fledged a couple of weeks ago was electrocuted in Decorah.  How devasted we all are.

Awesome….that is our Eagle family! Love it.

    • AWESOME! This is so GREAT! I would like to THANK RRP,BOB, AMY, and the rest of the crew along with USTREAM for a surprising coabmeck!!! I was so thrilled the cam was turned back on. I could only imagine just how incredibly busy Bob and Amy are with a few more major projects they are currently working on. They have gone above and beyond to make complete strangers very happy. I feel as though I have found a whole new family with the DECORAH EAGLE 5, as well as the RRP FORUM MEMBERS & USTREAM. Within the past 4 or 5 months or so, I have been filled with an abundance of information and knowledge by being educated on our Eagle Family and as well as all eagles and other raptors in general. What a tremendous learning tool, all of this with a few clicks of a mouse and their dedication to the preservation of the Raptors that we all have grown to know and love. I am overwhelmed by the thought of how the DECORAH EAGLE CAM can bring together THOUSANDS, no correction, MILLIONS of people from all over the UNITED STATES and actually all over the WORLD. I myself can admit it has enriched my life, and by what I have read and witnessed lives of many others. PS (Not that kind)SMILES. As far as the controversial banding & transmitting of our D1/E2 we will always have a few nay-sayers in the group. I for one am all for the banding/transmitting. Bob would have NEVER have proceeded if it would harm our little DIVA in any way, shape or form. It was done for scientific reasons as well as WE all want to know where she will migrate to or how she lives out the rest of her life. After all, we all were with the E’s from the time of the 1st laying, hatching, branching, & fledging and most importantly their first FISHING EXPERIENCE. They have become a significant part of our lives. Thank You, Chris
